ICC Anti-Corruption Unit has revealed that former chief Paul Kandon a sensational match-fixing was involved in every team in the nineties. Kandon said the match-fixing was not just limited to the Indian subcontinent. He also lashed out at cricket debut show of commercialism and T-20 leagues.

China foreign exchange

Chinese banks extended 470.0 billion yuan ($73.6 billion) in new local currency loans in September, down from 548.5 billion yuan in August and below market expectations.
China's foreign exchange reserves, the world's largest stockpile, rose by $4.2 billion in the third quarter to $3.2 trillion, the central bank said on Friday.
KEY POINTS:
Median forecast for foreign exchange reserves at the end of September was $3.305 trillion.
Reserves rose by $47.8 billion in July, $17.2 billion in August and dropped by $60.8 billion in September.
Outstanding yuan loans rose 15.9 pct yr/yr (forecast 16.1 pct)
M2 money growth up 13.0 pct (forecast 13.8 pct)
Sept CPI up 6.1 pct yr/yr (f'cast 6.1 pct; Aug 6.2 pct)
Sept PPI up 6.5 pct yr/yr (f'cast 6.8 pct; Aug 7.3 pct)
QIU GAOQING, ECONOMIST, BANK OF COMMUNICATIONS, SHANGHAI
"M2 growth was slower than expected mainly because both deposit and lending growth slowed and less inflow of capital.
"The weakening of the euro against the dollar in the third quarter may have also curbed the nominal growth of Chinese forex reserves."
ZHANG ZHIWEI, CHIEF ECONOMIST AT NOMURA SECURITIES IN HONG KONG:
"The money and credit data last month are much lower than market expectations, indicating that the liquidity condition is relatively tight, which can also be seen from the cash strains faced by some enterprises.
"The M2 figure is somewhat distorted and excludes some non-bank loans, such as trust loans and shadow banking credit.
"In that case, we cannot say the central bank would relax its monetary stance just because of a lower-than-expected M2 figure.
"Instead, we think the central bank would maintain its current tightening monetary policy unchanged.
"China saw a surprisingly low growth in foreign exchange reserves in the third quarter, partly due to some valuation factors.
"We know that the euro is falling and dollar is strong, so the total incremental value of foreign exchange will be reduced when using the dollar to denominate the euro assets.
"The changing valuation of currencies is only a temporary factor and could not last for a long while, if the situation in the euro zone countries improves."
HU YUEXIAO, ECONOMIST, SHANGHAI SECURITIES, SHANGHAI:
"China's trade surplus has been narrowing in 2011.
"Global funds, which have bet on yuan appreciation are no longer channeling huge sums of money into China as global financial turbulence escalates.
"A divergence in the growth of money supply and credit expansion is mainly because of growing lending activities outside banks' balance sheets."
BANNY LAM, ECONOMIST, CCB INTERNATIONAL, HONG KONG:
"A narrower trade surplus and less foreign investment into China because of the credit crunch and slowing growth in developed economies are the main reasons for a slower accumulation in forex reserves.
"Particularly in September, there was a big drop in stock markets, global investors repatriated some money from emerging countries including China.
"But this is temporary."
DU ZHENGZHENG, ANALYST AT CHINA DEVELOPMENT BANK SECURITIES, BEIJING:
"All the money and credit data are much lower than the market consensus, showing Beijing's tightening policies have had a strong effect.
"I think the central bank could probably relax some control on credit to safeguard the economic growth, because an increase of 13 percent in the money supply is not strong enough to meet the real demand from the economy.
COMMENTARY ON INFLATION DATA: ALISTAIR THORNTON, ECONOMIST, IHS GLOBAL INSIGHT, BEIJING:
"The tightening of monetary policy and growth moderation have ensured that inflation is now in the retreat.
"Softer international commodity prices and easing demand from advanced economies should embed this trend into next year.
"However, the liquidity backlog and pressure from structural wage gains will ensure that inflation remains well above desired levels, narrowing the policy space available for loosening.
"Narrow policy space is available, though. RRR has become less necessary on account of easing capital inflow pressure, and will be the policy tool of choice when authorities signal a start to loosening.
"Interest rates would follow if growth deceleration picks up, but should lag RRRs and credit easing, given that real rates are stuck in negative territory.
"For the moment, we remain in policy stasis -- no more tightening, but no real loosening -- while Chinese authorities nervously eye developments in the euro zone."
GEORGE WORTHINGTON, CHIEF ECONOMIST, ASIA PACIFIC, IFR MARKETS
"As supply responds, food inflation should ease rapidly over the next six months and help pull overall inflation down to around 4 percent.
"While non-food inflation has quickened over the past year, it has been largely unchanged over the past six months, suggesting little danger of acceleration.
"The central bank may even see fit to ease policy before the end of the year, perhaps starting with cuts to very high reserve requirements, though it will be keen to keep a grip on lending growth.
"Rate cuts are unlikely to be on the agenda barring a renewed global slump given the relatively modest tightening on that front since the last crisis in 2008/09."
SHEN JIANGUANG, ECONOMIST, MIZUHO SECURITIES ASIA, HONG KONG:
"The PPI data showed imported inflation pressures are easing as global commodity prices dropped.
"Chinese inflation will see a fast downward trend in the fourth quarter, falling below 5 percent in December. We have a bumper grain harvest and pork prices have peaked.
"The data come as a relief to the Chinese government, which now faces a deadlock in policymaking. It will fine-tune policies in December.
"Right now, they are not sure that inflation is slowing just (based on) one month's number. The policy will be on hold for one or two more months.
"I don't think we need to worry about a possible rebound in inflation in the first quarter of 2012, if the government does not roll out a stimulus package the size of 2008. That is very unlikely.
"As the real deposit rate is still deeply negative, China has no room to cut interest rates. So a broad-based policy relaxation will start with a cut in banks' required reserves."
LI HUIYONG, ECONOMIST, SHENYIN & WANGUO SECURITIES, SHANGHAI:
"CPI and PPI are matching the market consensus, which suggests that inflation has peaked and is easing gradually.
"We forecast inflation to slow further to below 6 percent in October and could ease to below 5 percent as early as November.
"We think the full-year inflation may be about 5.5 percent. PPI is also expected to slow gradually.
"But given overall prices remain at a high level, unless there are looming risks of a sharp economic slowdown, or a hard landing, it is otherwise difficult to see a relaxation in monetary policy."
QIAO YONGYUAN, ANALYST, CEBM, SHANGHAI:
"The CPI cooled a bit, partly due to moderating non-food prices and slowing food prices.
"But the slowdown in CPI last month is not drastic enough to reduce inflationary expectations, and it is still too early to confirm an easing trend in price pressures.
"The central bank is more likely to keep its current monetary stance unchanged and will wait for data in coming months to judge the direction of policy."
WANG JIN, ANALYST, GUOTAI JUNAN SECURITIES, SHANGHAI:
"Both CPI and PPI in September are in line with market forecasts, easing from previous highs. That could lead the central bank to put policy tightening on hold.
"But since (prices) are still at a relatively high level, the central bank is unlikely to relax its monetary stance any time soon."
CHI SUN, ECONOMIST, NOMURA, HONG KONG:
"Policy will be on hold. We think inflation will slow gradually in coming months. This confirms that inflation peaked in July.
"We think the next move will be tightening (step) in the first quarter of next year. If the economy stabilizes, financial reforms will be restarted again."

MARKET REACTION:
- The Shanghai stock market <.SSEC> pared early losses and was down 0.2 percent after the data. The yuan eased a shade from the mid-point set by the central bank to 6.3780 on the dollar.
BACKGROUND:
Lending and money growth have slowed steadily this year as the central bank steered monetary conditions back to normal after unleashing an extraordinary surge in bank credit in 2009 to counter the global financial crisis.
China's ballooning currency reserves are driven by solid trade surplus and foreign direct investment, and Beijing's buying of foreign currencies to hold down the yuan.
China has long pledged to diversify its reserves, but as much as 70 percent of the holdings are still invested in U.S. dollar assets, including U.S. Treasuries, according to analysts.
Since October 2010, Beijing has raised interest rates five times and banks' required reserves nine times.
China's economy has slowed under the weight of tightening and waning overseas demand, but not dramatically. Most analysts still expect the world's No. 2 economy to grow at least 9 percent this year.

30 civilians' killings: Army

The army Thursday described the killing of the Hizbul Mujahideen (HM) commander, Mushtaq Khan, as a major success, saying he was responsible for 30 civilian killings.
'Mushtaq Khan alias Mushtaq Killer was responsible for 30-odd civilian killings and was active in Ganderbal district for more than ten years,' Maj. Gen. Gurdeep Singh, General Officer Commanding (GOC) Victor Force, told a media conference in north Kashmir's Ganderbal district.
'He controlled the militant activities in the district. Six to eight militants, both foreigners and locals, are still active in Ganderbal district and Mushtaq controlled them.'
Khan and a militnat were killed in a gunfight between the guerrillas and the security forces in Gotlibagh forests of Ganderbal Wednesday. A third guerrilla, Muzaffar, was arrested.
Two AK-47 rifles, two magazines and a Chinese grenade were recovered from the slain guerrillas.
The operation against the guerrilla commander was carried out jointly by 5 Rashtriya Rifles and the Jammu and Kashmir Police after a specific tip-off about the presence of the guerrillas in the Gotlibagh forests, 30 km from Srinagar.

Supermarket FDI plan

India is moving quickly on a plan to open its $450 billion retail sector to global players such as Wal-Mart despite concerns about job losses among millions of small neighbourhood stores, India's industry secretary said on Wednesday.
The emerging Asian power has dallied for years about bringing foreign investment to supermarkets. The move is seen by many as crucial to tame food prices but is resisted by small shopkeepers who are now the backbone in India's retail economy.
Foreign retailers such as Wal-Mart , Carrefour SA, Tesco Plc and Metro AG want to invest directly in India's fast growing retail market, but the policy has so far been held up by political resistance.
"Please don't ask me for a timeline, but we are proceeding very fast," Industry Secretary R.P. Singh told Reuters in an interview. "It's certainly not on the back burner."
Despite his optimism, the plan has not yet been approved by the cabinet, with job-loss concerns ahead of state elections next year and a general election in 2014, slowing policy.
Currently, up to 40 percent of India's harvests rot because of inadequate cold storage and supply bottlenecks, a situation some economists say foreign money in supermarkets will help resolve.
"The idea is that the multi-brand retail should be able to help us in addressing the infrastructure gap, so the back end infrastructure is very important for us," Singh said.
However, he said concerns that such conditions would be too restrictive on companies were unfounded.
"Conditions are not such that they will reduce the viability of the global players here," he said.
A committee of top civil servants, of which Singh was a member, in July agreed to recommend to the cabinet allowing foreign firms to take a 51 percent stake in such multi-brand retail operations.
Turning to wider economic issues, Singh also told Reuters that industrial growth was weak in August, as businesses held back investments because of high inflation and interest rates.

Reliance KG D6 output

British oil major BP expects gas output from Reliance Industries' KG D6 blocks off India's east coast to rise from 2014, BP's group Chief Executive Bob Dudley said on Wednesday.
BP acquired a 30 percent stake in 21 oil and gas blocks from Reliance earlier this year in a $7.2 billion deal, one of the largest investments in India's oil and gas sector, and output from the blocks is expected to rise given BP's expertise in deep water exploration.
Earlier this month, India's upstream regulator said Reliance is currently producing 44 mscmd (million standard cubic metres a day) of gas from the D6 block, compared to 60 mscmd a year earlier.

Affair Transform into a Permanent Relationship

When a guy kicks-off an affair with a girl the thoughts of a permanent relationship do not cross the mind so early (or so easily).
Many affairs fizz out soon and end up being just flings. But some affairs last longer and may morph into a relationship. In most cases, it's here when the question starts cropping up in the head.
Generally, it's the woman who initiates this talk of entering into a permanent relationship. Some guys may get caught unawares as they hardly ever consider “taking the relationship to the next level”. A woman is more likely to get emotional in the course of a relationship.
How Should an Affair Transform into a Permanent Relationship
The critical question is that how should the transition from an affair to a permanent relationship take place. Some men give up their careers, families, passions etc. in the pursuit of that hot babe. Many married men screw their nuptial bond for this. These are certainly unwise decisions which hardly yield anything good. Most married men end up landing in a no man's land. They are disowned by both the parties and are left distraught. So a hurried decision would do no good to you.
Entering into a permanent relationship is an important decision. You must sit down and assess whether the person with whom you want to enter into a relationship is the actually the right person. We don't want you to think like a robot or as if this is a business deal but considering some aspects is certainly good. Also, don't formulate notions in your head about the girl. You have to remain calm all this while because any sort of anxiety might hamper your judgement.
How Should an Affair Transform into a Permanent Relationship
Apart from the contemplation, you also need to talk to your girl. After all, a relationship is a two-way thing. Find out if she really enjoys your company. On a date, try to depart early. Say that something really important has come up and you need to make a move right now. Observe her behaviour and try to ascertain if she feels sad at your early departure. If she does feel sad and gives indications that she hates your absence, then you have some groundwork for a serious conversation about building a relationship.
How Should an Affair Transform into a Permanent Relationship
Another important yardstick is sex. Both of you should be able to connect in the bed at an emotional level. If the entire process is effortless and you feel the bond, then she may be the right girl for you. But if you feel that sex is more of an ordeal for you or all you get is some physical pleasure with no emotional contentment, then it's time to give the entire thing a serious thought.
Now if you feel that she is the right girl for you, it's time to communicate this to her. Don't squander too much time in this. The longer you wait, the more stressed out you will become. At the same time, you also don't need to rush through it. Propose her in a way that wins her heart.

Victims of Bollywood

Morphology is a subject in which many Bollywood actresses seem to be getting lessons of late.
The art of morphing pics (merging two images as one) is becoming a steady trend in Bollywood with more and more high profile actresses falling victim to it. A lot of blame game ensues but those responsible for it are rarely brought to work.
Here are some actresses who have cried foul over morphed pictures of them which became public.
Kajal Agarwal
Morphed Victims of Bollywood
'Singham' girl, Kajal Agarwal was furious when she saw her topless pic on the cover of FHM magazine. Kajal said that she was wearing a black tube during the shoot and maintained that she would never do a topless shoot. Meanwhile, the magazine has come clean about the fact saying that the allegations are false and are not to be blamed for Kajal's sudden change of mind.
Sonakshi Sinha
Morphed Victims of Bollywood
Sonakshi Sinha also saw red when she came across photos of her appearing on Maxim magazine in a bikini. When Sonakshi's bikini pics started circulating online, she was quick to deny that it was her in the photos. In reality, the actress was wearing a black dress on the cover of the magazine and the morphing was probably the result of some mischievous netizens.
Vidya Balan
Morphed Victims of Bollywood
Close on the heels of Sonakshi Sinha's morphed photos came Vidya Balan's turn. She too appeared wearing a bikini for the same magazine, which, of course, was morphed. In fact, Vidya even denied that she had shot for the mag, forget getting into a bikini.
Celina Jaitley
Morphed Victims of Bollywood
In 2009, Celina Jaitley filed a legal case against a gadgets blog and a Bollywood portal for uploading obscene pictures of hers. The morphed pic showed Celina wearing a white tee and a black panty bearing the words "slide to unlock" in a derogatory fashion.
Anushka Sharma
Morphed Victims of Bollywood
Anushka Sharma also joined the league of morphed actresses when pics of her in a bikini started doing the rounds. Ever since the news of Anushka wearing a bikini in her film 'Ladies v/s Ricky Bahl' came around, over-enthusiastic netizens started morphing pictures of her and circulating it all over the internet.

Professor Robin Milhausen said: “Those who have any number of sexual concerns are more likely to be unfaithful. What we’ve interpreted from this is that people with problems in the bedroom, where their issues can become a self-fulfilling prophecy are more likely to look outside their relationship.
“Being with a new partner is risky and exciting, and might help someone increase their arousal enough to avoid sexual problems.”
Are you worried about this? Does your man have a wandering eye? Does he struggle in the satisfaction department? If the answer is yes, read on to discover what psychologist and sex and relationship expert Donna Dawson thinks about why men cheat.
he opportunist:
We all know this guy! He’s the Mark Wright of the cheating world. It’s not about your relationship or even you for that matter, it’s about him being in the right place at the right time. If he’s always out getting drunk with his mates all the time then be wary, he could be playing away.
The infatuation junkie
You know the feeling you get when you spot someone you fancy, the chemical high and the butterflies? Well this guy loves those feeling and is more likely to cheat when he meets someone new and exciting.
The affair of ego massage
How predictable – this is the guy who just wants to know he’s still got ‘it’ and he’s still attractive. This bloke is most likely in a long-term, stable relationship but he’s eager to recapture his youth.
The affair of protest
If your relationship is a bit rocky or you haven’t got enough time for one another then your boyfriend might be out finding someone to provide what you’re not giving. He may drop hints as a cry for help – keep an eye out for lipstick on the collar ladies.
The serious affair
This is the one to watch. This man is prepared to give up anything for his new love and he doesn’t care if he gets caught.

Amisha salutes

Bollywood starlet Amisha Patel has saluted activist Anna Hazare for his fight against corruption and hoped his efforts would yield the desired results.

'Whatever he is doing is great. I salute him for that. I sincerely hope and wish that all his fasting and protesting does yield the desired results,' said Amisha Tuesday.

Hazare's fast at New Delhi's Ramlila Maidan for a stringent anti-corruption law entered its eighth day Tuesday.

Amisha, 36, who was here to launch a spa, scotched speculation that she was planning to foray into the small screen.

'Yes, I accept that the small screen is now no more small. Big and established stars are all joining the bandwagon. But for me it's a no. I have not been approached for any television programme as I am busy with my upcoming Bollywood projects,' said she.

Amisha, who has shared screen space with major heroes like Hrithik Roshan and Salman Khan, is yet to establish herself in the industry in spite of being part of two record breaking movies - 'Kaho Naa... Pyaar Hai' and 'Gadar-Ek Prem Katha' with Sunny Deol.

After her brother Asmit featured in the reality TV show 'Bigg Boss', there has been speculation of producers approaching her. 'Yes, there are such rumors but let me make it very clear, I have not been approached for any TV show whatsoever.'

About her upcoming projects, Amisha said: 'There are four movies in the pipeline. One is directed by Priyadarshan and produced by my production house, then there is 'Race 2' by director-duo Abbas-Mustan, another directed by David Dhawan and one more yet undecided.'

SINGHAM Has Nothing To Do With DABANGG

Ajay Dewgan Say!
With a slate of action movies being made these days, it seems the 80-90's era, which was known for churning out best of the action flicks in Bollywood, has returned. And this is the order of the day what with bollywood's biggest of the stars turning to action. The latest one being Ajay Devgn who returns as action hero after a gap of 8 years with SINGHAM.
However actor Ajay Devgan confesses that audiences are the same it's our outlook which had changed.
"Audience hasn't changed. It was we who forgot that they always wanted this... We were trying to make different cinema and concentrating on class cinema than mass cinema. But when GHAJINI and WANTED came we realized that they still demand the same," says Ajay.
From the time promos hit the screens, Ajay Devgn's SINGHAM is touted to be another DABANGG and a lot of comparisons are being made with respect to action sequences and presenting style. However, Ajay makes it clear that there is no similarity between the two.
Says Ajay, "We have nothing to do with DABANGG. The only similarity is that both are wearing uniform. The story is same but whole screenplay is changed." Furthermore Ajay says that the action in SINGHAM is in a raw format though presented in stylized manner as compared to other action movies, "It's a very raw action presented into a stylized manner which has not happened earlier. Either it's a raw action or its stylized action which we have seen till date."
Talking about his role in SINGHAM, Ajay once again plays a cop. But this cop is pretty different from what he played all these years. Reveals Ajay, "The SINGHAM cop is more aggressive. If you compare with GANGAJAL cop, he stuck by the law, went by the book. He did not take law in his hands. Whereas this guy is more simple. He does what he feels right."

Aishwarya To Shed Light On Heroine

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan is upset with the media for having written stories about her while not many tried to contact her or her spokesperson. She will soon be releasing a statement not just on her pregnancy but on other issues as well, including what happened to her and the film Heroine. She will also shed some light on the communication that took place with film director Madhur Bhandarkar and the producer of UTV. Rai is happy with her Khakee director Rajkumar Santoshi for saying he would not make his film without her and would wait for her to be back in shape after the baby comes. We reckon Ash will be shooting for his film Ladies And Gentlemen first & not Heroine, since, she is not too happy with the makers of Heroine for leaking out information that was privy only to them.

Sara Khan's nana breathes his last

Ram Milaayi Jodi actress Sara Khan's maternal grandfather wasn't keeping well for a while and recently breathed his last, leaving Sara numb and cold.
A source tells us, "Sara's nana stayed in Bhopal and wasn't keeping well for a while now. He was suffering from a lung disorder and doctors had hinted that he will pass away soon. As soon as Sara got this information she rushed to Bhopal to meet him. It was unfortunate that he passed away on Sunday night. She has suffered a great loss as she was really close to him. She is disheartened and trying to cope with the loss."
We tried getting in touch with Sara Khan but she remained unavailable.

DOUBLE DHAMAAL

Just like in Hollywood, sequels to big blockbuster hits have acquired brand status in Bollywood too. DHOOM, GOLMAAL and HERA PHERI are a few brands that the audiences have accepted with arms wide open. And with the tremendous response to the teasers and trailers of Indra Kumar's DOUBLE DHAMAAL, a sequel to his runaway hit, DHAMAAL, it's quite apparent that soon DHAMAAL too will acquire a brand status.
The reasons for the above can be attributed to three important factors. First of all, the film which has been co-produced by corporate house, Reliance Entertainment, is definitely looking much bigger as its canvas appears quite large. Unlike the original, DOUBLE DHAMAAL has been shot at exotic locales like the Victoria Harbour in the Pearl of the East Hong Kong and the ancient casino city of Macau. Secondly, the glamour quotient (which was sorely missing in the original) finds place here as glamorous heroines like Kangana Ranaut, Mallika Sherawat are scorching the screens with their hot looks. And last but not the least, the jokes and the gags are definitely of a much better quality (taking nothing away from the original) as is evident from the dialogue promos.
Well, keeping the above factors in mind we have high hopes from DOUBLE DHAMAAL, now that Salman's READY has hit the bull's eye!

TV's Winfrey Bows Out With Simplicity

Oprah Winfrey kicked off her last original episode of "The Oprah Winfrey Show" by telling a studio audience that the broadcast would be a simple, celebrity-free affair focused on what her audience has meant to her.
"You and this show have been the great love of my life," a tearful Winfrey told viewers in "The Oprah Winfrey Finale," taped before an audience of 400 on Tuesday afternoon and broadcast on Wednesday morning.
"This last show is really about me saying thank you," she said. "It is my love letter to you."
Wearing a simple pink dress, Winfrey took the stage to a standing ovation and showed clips from some of her earliest broadcasts while sharing her life lessons with viewers.
"Thank you, America. There are no words to match this moment."
Winfrey, 57, was a pioneer in confessional television, promoting discussion of formerly taboo subjects including incest, rape, sexual abuse and depression.
"The Oprah Winfrey Show" also became the go-to place for celebrities and politicians to promote new ventures and to apologize publicly for their indiscretions.
The Oprah Book Club, started 15 years ago, championed 65 titles and has almost 2 million members. In one memorable 2004 show, Winfrey gave all 276 audience members a new car.
Winfrey announced in November 2009 that she would end her popular talk show after 25 years. She is expected to focus in the next few years on her cable channel OWN (Oprah Winfrey Network), which launched in January 2011.
In contrast to the glitzy "surprise spectacular" featuring Beyonce , Madonna and Tom Hanks, taped in a basketball arena and which aired on Monday and Tuesday, the final broadcast was a humble recap of the values Winfrey believed in.
At one point the host introduced from the audience her fourth-grade teacher, Mrs. Duncan, whom she praised as an early "liberator" who made her feel valued.
Winfrey urged viewers to find their calling, make the world a better place and take control of their lives. One of her most cherished tributes, she said, was a letter from a viewer who said "Oprah, watching you be yourself makes me want to be more myself."

Hollywood, Heavyweight Directors

Hollywood's big guns and some of independent cinema's heavyweight directors will share the limelight at this year's Cannes film festival, which opens with Woody Allen's "Midnight in Paris" on Wednesday.
At what critics expect to be a vintage edition of the world's biggest cinema showcase,Angelina Jolie, Brad Pitt, Sean Penn, Penelope Cruz, Robert De Niro, Mel Gibson and Johnny Depp are all expected to walk the red carpet.
There they will be joined by darlings of the European festival circuit -- Pedro Almodovar, Nanni Moretti, the Dardenne brothers, Aki Kaurismaki and Lars Von Trier -- who are all vying for the coveted Palme d'Or prize for best picture.
And U.S. veteran Terrence Malick is finally back in the main competition with only his fifth feature, the eagerly anticipated "The Tree of Life" in which Pitt and Penn star in a family saga set in the Midwest during the 1950s.
"There is a very strong buzz and great expectations," said festival general delegate Thierry Fremaux, who has come under fire in recent years for what some considered to be below-par, line-ups light on star power.
For three years the global financial crisis has dulled Hollywood's appetite for expensive marketing trips abroad, but studios appear to be hungry to wheel and deal in Cannes again.
"America is very present this year. The studios are back -- professionals, agents. They are everywhere in the hotels," Fremaux told Reuters.
As luxury yachts bobbed in the harbour of the French Riviera resort under clear blue skies, last-minute preparations for the May 11-22 movie marathon were underway.
Movie posters adorned five-star hotels along the palm-lined Croisette waterfront and bars, restaurants and nightclubs geared up for a hectic two weeks of late-night, big-spending revelry.

ALLEN HONOURED

Allen's romantic comedy stars Owen Wilson and Marion Cotillard as well as French first lady Carla Bruni, raising expectations among the 4,000-strong press corps in Cannes that she will walk the red carpet.
Cannes also includes biopic "La Conquete" (The Conquest), which portrays Bruni's husband, French President Nicolas Sarkozy, during his 2007 election win and the collapse of his previous marriage to Cecilia.
Women feature more prominently in the main competition than usual, although they still only account for four of 20 entries.
Scotland's Lynne Ramsay presents "We Need To Talk About Kevin", based on Lionel Shriver's bestselling novel and Australian Julia Leigh directs "Sleeping Beauty", described as a "haunting erotic fairy tale".
French actress/director Maiwenn Le Besco has directed "Polisse" about a photographer who begins an affair with a cop, and Japan's Naomi Kawase brings "Hanezu No Tsuki", four years after her "The Mourning Forest" won the runner-up Grand Prix award in 2007.
Belgium's Dardenne brothers have a chance to become the first directors to scoop the Palme d'Or three times with "The Kid With A Bike" and festival favourite Almodovar will aim to lift his first Golden Palm with "The Skin I Live In".
Denmark's Von Trier is back two years after his "Antichrist" became the most talked-about film at Cannes for years for its graphic violence and sexual content.
This time he is in competition with "Melancholia", starring Kirsten Dunst as a bride celebrating her marriage as a planet threatens to collide with Earth.
Cannes features blockbuster sequels "Kung Fu Panda 2" starring Jolie and Jack Black, and "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides" with Depp and Cruz.
Economic recovery following the global financial crisis may also breath life into the giant Cannes market place where film rights are bought and sold away from the media glare.

Lady Gaga wants non-glamorous life

Pop star Lady Gaga insists she wants to live a 'normal' life and has no interest in the 'glamorous' Hollywood social gatherings.
'I actually made a choice to keep my life pretty normal. Some point about two years ago I said to myself, 'OK, am I going to put my toe in Hollywood's pond and figure out if I want to live a glamorous life and assimilate to the glamorous lifestyle,' but I really didn't want to do it,' contactmusic.com quoted her as saying.
'I still live where I always lived, I still hang out and drink whisky at the same bars. I still go to the same hardware store.'
Gaga, whose real name is Stefani Germanotta, says fans see her real side.
'I've become more and more confident as a woman and I don't make any distinction between myself as Stefani, my birth name, and myself.'
'Gaga - It's just a nickname, I'm the same person through and through physically. Who my fans see that's really who I am and they have never complained to me about it. If they do I will certainly be listening to it and paying attention as I want them to be happy.'

Hema Malini to do cameo in 'Aarakshan'

Bollywood megastar Amitabh Bachchan and veteran actress Hema Malini, who were seen together on screen in 'Baghban' and 'Baabul', will be seen together again in 'Aarakshan'.
'Hemaji joins us tomorrow (Tuesday) for the shooting of 'Aarakshan' .. a cameo but all looking forward to her arrival ... 'Baghbaan' remembered (sic),' Amitabh posted on micro-blogging site Twitter Monday night.
In their heyday, the two actors shot together for many movies like 'Satte Pe Satta' and 'Sholay'. More recently, they also paired up for 'Veer Zaara'.
Amitabh is currently in Bhopal shooting for Prakash Jha's 'Aarakshan', a movie on caste based reservations in government jobs and educational institutions in India.
The movie features actors Saif Ali Khan, Deepika Padukone, Prateik Babbar and Manoj Bajpayee.

The Great Franchise Of Dhoom 3 "Amir Khan"

Aamir Khan is excited to play villain in 'Dhoom 3'. The superstar Wednesday said 'Dhoom' was a great franchise to work in even though he initially didn't think he would fit in.
'I have recently signed 'Dhoom 3'. I liked the script very much. When I had watched 'Dhoom', I liked it a lot. I enjoyed the music and the whole attitude. It's a very fun film. I really liked it. I never thought I would fit in this kind of film,' Aamir told reporters at a press meet here.
Victor Acharya, who wrote 'Dhoom' and 'Dhoom 2' is the writer-director of 'Dhoom 3'. The earlier installments were directed by Sanjay Gadhvi and starred Abhishek Bachchan and Uday Chopra.
'When I heard the story from Victor, I really enjoyed it. Very well-written script, very enjoyable. It's a great franchise and I am happy to be part of it. I am also looking forward to work with Abhishek and Uday,' Aamir said.
'It's true that for the first time I'm doing a negative role, an anti-hero in the mainstream film. I liked my role and all the characters are very well-written. Actually, in between I did another negative role in an offbeat film '1947 Earth',' said Aamir.
This is the second time Aamir is working with Yash Raj Films after 'Fanaa' in 2006.
'I have worked with Yash Raj and I have a very comfortable relation with them,' he said.
The actor said Victor and producer Aditya Chopra are yet to decide the actress opposite him.
While 'Dhoom' starred John Abraham as villain, 'Dhoom 2' saw Hrithik Roshan and Aishwarya Rai sizzle too.
Victor Acharya's debut 'Tashan' (2008) fared badly at the box office but that didn't deter Aamir from signing his film.
'I think he is a very talented director. One shouldn't decide a director's capacity with the fate of any one of his films. I have full faith in him,' Aamir said.
